As the founder of LESSONS ABOUND, I am happy that it operates as I envisioned. It is a community of adults and youth that engage in artistic and personal growth, passion, risk-taking, and creativity. Students stay because they progress quickly with solid technique and gain confidence and skills to perform, all while while having a great time.
Adults carve out time in their busy schedules to joyously play their favorite songs, whether they are adult beginners or resuming after taking a break. Children bound into their lessons after school to play tunes that they love.
So, if this sounds like an environment for you to thrive in, hopefully you'll reach out and consider joining us. Explore and grow, as our lessons abound!
-Niki Williams (Founder, Performing Artist, & Teacher)
Niki Williams has taught for over 12 years, with a fun, effective approach that equips students with techniques to quickly progress in playing the piano. Much of her success stems from her extensive training and performance experiences. Also, she has expertise in two artistic fields: music and acting. Adults and children who pursue multiple areas in the performing arts or musical theatre (which requires music, acting, and dance skills) take advantage of this. Students who study one area also benefit since she's able to integrate interdisciplinary techniques, e.g., to help piano students produce rich, colorful music with ease.
Ms. Williams studied music at Columbia University. There, she was classically trained in piano by Niels Ostbye, then head of Keyboard/Piano Performance. Music theory, harmony, composition, music history, and ear training were also vital aspects of her music education. Additionally, she learned vocal techniques and performed while exploring vocal repertoire with Jane McMahan at Barnard College.
Her music training also includes other notable musicians and teachers in NYC. In particular, Niki honed techniques for playing the piano while studying with Madeline Bruser (Julliard-trained classical pianist, author, and founder of The Art of Practicing Institute). Furthermore, she studied piano and voice with Robin Small (Berklee College of Music-trained musician and singer) and singing technique with Alba Quezada Bloomgarden (USC-trained opera singer, Linklater Voice & Speech specialist).
Ms. Williams was also groomed in music pedagogy, performance, and arts management while working with the head of two music programs and teaching music as a staff member. For instance, she supervised the Henry Street Settlement's Music School, including over 30 instructors from the US, Asia, Europe, and South America, while assisting the head of it, Alison Jones (Mannes College of Music-trained classical pianist, founder of the Woodhill Players). She conducted admissions interviews; assessed and placed students; and helped run music classes and recitals.
In addition to this comprehensive background, Ms. Williams draws upon her array of performance experiences as a classically-trained musician, songwriter, and composer to guide her students. This includes her playing piano and singing in shows, leading music workshops, musical theatre productions, songwriter demo work in studios, and having her songs performed by others, including at Barnard College.
Channeling this combination of education and performance expertise, Ms. Williams has successfully prepared her students with the skills to perform, including for piano performance at NYSSMA that garnered high scores and in shows. Additionally, having trained in Alexander and Linklater techniques for music and acting, she has developed an approach that enables students to deeply connect to their music as well as produce it expressively in healthy ways.
Ms. Williams completed acting conservatory training at the Maggie Flanigan Studio in New York, studying Meisner technique directly with Maggie Flanigan; Linklater technique for voice and speech with Alyssa Ciccarello (Tisch School of the Arts-trained & Designated Linklater Center Teacher); and Williamson technique with Nathan Flower (Director of the Meisner Studio at NYU Tisch School of the Arts & Certified Williamson Practitioner). She also studied Alexander technique while training in and performing Shakespeare; this has also equipped her with techniques for producing sound as a vocalist and pianist in healthy ways. Morever, she studied on-camera technique with Bob Krakower, a top acting coach to award-winning actors and actresses.
Niki has extensive acting performance experiences, including short films, commercials, as well as NY and regional theatre productions, both classical and contemporary. She has worked with the Tony Award-winning Alliance Theatre and McCarter Theatre. Notable roles include Beneatha from A Raisin in the Sun, Esther from Intimate Apparel (she was award-nominated for her lead role), Athena (in multiple productions), and Natalie in "Common Grounds."
"Lynn Nottage's award-winning INTIMATE APPAREL...It's a show that more than relies on its main character and whatever actress is chosen to play her, an actress who must have talent, timing, stamina and the ability to ride an emotional roller coaster. Viola Davis won a Drama Desk award playing Esther over a decade ago, and thank goodness Nikole Williams, playing the part of Esther at American Stage, possesses those ncessary, award-winning qualities as well...Williams' Esther is an incredibly moving creation, a character that is stunningly memorable." -Peter Nason, Broadwayworld.com
"Nikole Williams’s engaging performance as Walter’s protofeminist sister, Beneatha Younger, seems figuratively to dance with inner emotionally intelligent life." -Contributed Content and John Stoltenberg, Capital Gazette
"Nikole Williams delivers a powerful performance as Esther...she would be reason enough to see the show." -Andrew Meacham, Tampa Bay Times
"Nikole Williams is a dynamo in the role of Beneatha Younger aka Bennie." -Danielle Angeline, MD Theatre Guide
